Dry and dehydrated skin

Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks water, and any skin type can become dehydrated. Both feel tight and look dull. Layering water-based hydration under a cream that seals it in is the core of Korean, Japanese and Chinese routines.

How to choose

Layer hydration

After cleansing, pat a hydrating toner or lotion into damp skin, add a serum if you like, and seal everything in with a cream. Japanese lotions and Korean toners with hyaluronic acid or glycerin are made for this step.

Ingredients that help

Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw in water. Ceramides, squalane and shea butter reduce moisture loss and make skin feel supple. Urea softens rough patches.

Cleanse gently

Hot water and strong foaming cleansers strip oil. Use lukewarm water and a mild cream or gel cleanser, and apply your moisturiser within a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is hyaluronic acid enough for dry skin?

Hyaluronic acid adds water but does not stop it evaporating. Always finish with a cream, especially in winter or in a heated room.

How do I know whether my skin is dry or dehydrated?

Dry skin feels rough and needs rich textures all year. Dehydrated skin can be shiny and tight at the same time and improves quickly with hydrating layers.

What if my dry skin itches or cracks?

Very dry, itchy, red or cracked skin can be eczema. Talk to your GP or a dermatologist, especially if moisturiser does not bring relief.
