Grains, botanicals & transformation

Familiar ingredients, explored in new ways.

  • The roots

Joseon-era cleansing used rice water and finely ground beans and grains. Botanical waters also formed part of the beauty repertoire.

  • The making

Korean researchers study fermentation to transform botanicals such as ginseng. Microorganisms change the compounds in the ingredient before it is developed into a formula.

  • Make it yours

Explore fluid toners, light serums and richer creams. Choose one step that fits your routine; a long sequence is optional.

Japan

From the wash bowl to the emulsion

A story of everyday cleansing and carefully shaped textures.

  • The roots

In Edo-period Japan, rice bran was placed in cloth pouches called nukabukuro. Soaked and squeezed, they supplied liquid for face and body washing.

  • The making

Milky emulsions disperse oil in water. Ingredient balance, mixing and cooling shape their flow and feel, creating textures that differ from a rich cream.

  • Make it yours

Our Japanese selection includes watery lotions, fluid emulsions and rich creams. Compare the texture and product directions to find your everyday fit.

Petals, craft & the science of extraction

Plant knowledge, from colour-making to modern investigation.

  • The roots

Safflower petals were processed into rouge. Recipes preserved in Qimin Yaoshu reveal a craft built around drawing colour from plants.

  • The making

Modern botanical research compares plant varieties and extraction methods. Chinese peony studies show that the flower and solvent chosen change what an extract contains.
