Korean and Japanese toners
In Asian skincare a toner is not an astringent but a first layer of moisture, or a gentle exfoliant in liquid or pad form. Find the type that fits your skin.

How to choose
Hydrating toner or lotion
Hydrating toners, called “lotion” in Japan, add water-binding ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid straight after cleansing. Pat them in with your hands, and layer twice if your skin feels dry.
Exfoliating toner and toner pads
Toners and pads with AHA or BHA smooth the skin surface and help keep pores clear. Start a few times a week, use sunscreen during the day and keep other exfoliants out of the same routine.
Soothing toners
Formulas with heartleaf, centella or panthenol are popular with sensitive or easily reddened skin. Check the full ingredient list for any ingredients you know you react to.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a toner?
It is not essential, but a hydrating toner is an easy way to add moisture and helps the following steps spread evenly.
Cotton pad or hands?
Hydrating toners are usually patted in with clean hands. Exfoliating toners and liquids are often applied with a cotton pad, or come as ready-soaked pads.
Can I use an exfoliating toner every day?
Some are mild enough, but start slowly. If your skin stings or flakes, reduce how often you use it.
