Serums, ampoules and essences

Serums and essences are the targeted step of your routine: light textures with a focus on hydration, an even-looking tone or a calmer skin. Compare by ingredient and concern.

How to choose

Essence, serum or ampoule?

An essence is usually the most watery and is applied right after toner. A serum is a little richer and more targeted; an ampoule is the brand’s term for an especially concentrated serum. The labels overlap, so the ingredient list matters more than the name.

Choose by what you want to improve

Dull or uneven-looking skin: niacinamide, rice, vitamin C or tranexamic acid. Dehydrated skin: hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Sensitive skin: centella, heartleaf or panthenol.

How many serums can you use?

One or two well-chosen serums are plenty. Apply the thinnest first and let each layer settle before the next.

Frequently asked questions

When do I apply serum?

After cleansing and toner, before moisturiser. In the morning finish with sunscreen.

Can I combine niacinamide and vitamin C?

Many current formulas already combine them, and most skin tolerates using both. If your skin feels irritated, use them at different times of day.

How long before I see a difference?

Hydration is noticeable straight away. For tone and texture, give a serum several weeks of consistent use.
