Korean and Japanese sunscreen

Asian face sunscreens are known for textures you actually want to wear every day: fluid, serum-like or creamy, with no heavy white cast. Compare SPF, PA rating and finish below.

How to choose

SPF and PA: what the numbers mean

SPF indicates protection against UVB, the rays mainly responsible for sunburn. The PA rating (PA+ to PA++++) was developed in Japan and describes UVA protection: more plus signs means a higher rating. For daily use on the face, SPF 30 or higher is the usual starting point.

Pick a texture for your skin

Dry skin is often happiest with a creamy sunscreen that adds moisture. Oily or combination skin usually prefers a fluid or gel texture with a soft finish. If you wear makeup, a light serum-type sunscreen sits well underneath.

Use enough, and reapply

Protection depends on quantity. Apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning routine, cover face, ears and neck, and follow the pack’s instructions for reapplying, especially after sweating or towelling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen?

Chemical (organic) filters absorb UV radiation; mineral filters are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Many Asian sunscreens combine several filters. The full ingredient list on each product page shows exactly which ones are used.

Can I use sunscreen instead of moisturiser?

Some sunscreens moisturise well enough on their own for normal skin. With dry skin, apply your moisturiser first and finish with sunscreen.

Do I need sunscreen in winter?

UVA is present all year round, including on cloudy days. Daily protection is the simplest habit to keep.
