Essence, serum or ampoule: what is the difference?
Essence, serum and ampoule are often used side by side in Asian skincare, and the names can be confusing. This guide explains how they differ and how to choose.
Essence
Watery to slightly gel-like, applied after toner. An essence focuses on hydration and preparing the skin; think of COSRX Snail 96 Mucin or Japanese activating essences.
Serum
Somewhat thicker and more targeted at a specific concern, such as tone, fine lines or sensitivity. Often with a clear hero ingredient like niacinamide or vitamin C.
Ampoule
A brand term for an extra-concentrated serum, sometimes for short-term use. In practice the line between serum and ampoule is blurry.
Order and choice
Apply thinnest to thickest: toner, essence, serum or ampoule, then moisturiser. You do not need all three; one essence or one serum is often enough.

Frequently asked questions
Can I skip essence?
Yes. If your toner hydrates well, an essence is optional.
Can I use two serums?
Yes, as long as they complement each other. Apply the lighter one first.
Is a more expensive ampoule better?
Not necessarily. Compare the ingredient list and your skin’s needs rather than the price or name.
