Skincare with BHA (salicylic acid)

BHA, usually salicylic acid or the gentler betaine salicylate, is oil-soluble and can work inside pores. That is why it is the go-to exfoliant for blackheads, oily skin and blemishes.

How to choose

How BHA works

Salicylic acid loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and dissolves into sebum, so it helps keep pores clear. Betaine salicylate is a milder variant often found in Korean formulas.

Start slowly

Begin two to three times a week in the evening and build up if your skin tolerates it. Use sunscreen during the day and avoid combining several strong exfoliants.

Cleanser, liquid or pad?

A BHA cleanser is the gentlest because it is rinsed off. Liquids and pads stay on the skin and are more effective, and also more likely to irritate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use BHA during pregnancy?

Ask your doctor or midwife before using salicylic acid during pregnancy.

BHA or AHA?

AHA works mainly on the skin surface and suits dry or dull skin; BHA reaches into pores and suits oily, blemish-prone skin.

Why does my skin tingle?

A short tingle can happen. Stop using the product if you get persistent burning, redness or flaking.
