How to choose

How hyaluronic acid works

On the skin, hyaluronic acid holds moisture in the upper layers. Formulas often combine several molecular sizes, from a light film on the surface to smaller fragments.

Apply to slightly damp skin

Use a hyaluronic serum or toner straight after cleansing, then seal it in with a moisturiser so the water does not simply evaporate.

Hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate?

Both appear on labels. Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form and is common in water-based formulas. Both are counted on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is hyaluronic acid suitable for sensitive skin?

Generally yes; it is one of the most widely tolerated ingredients. Check the rest of the formula for fragrance or other ingredients you react to.

Can I use it with retinol or acids?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid is a useful hydrating partner for stronger active ingredients.

Is it an acid like AHA?

No. Despite the name, hyaluronic acid does not exfoliate.
