Double cleansing: how and why

Double cleansing is the evening habit behind many Korean and Japanese routines: an oil-based cleanser first, a water-based cleanser second. Here is why it works and how to do it without drying out your skin.

Why two steps?

Sunscreen, makeup and sebum are oil-soluble and do not always come off fully with a gel alone. An oil or balm dissolves them; the second cleanser removes the residue and any water-soluble dirt.

Step 1: oil or balm

Apply to dry skin with dry hands and massage for about a minute. Add a little water until the texture turns milky, then rinse thoroughly.

Step 2: gel or foam

Use a mild, preferably low-pH cleanser and keep it short. Your skin should feel clean, not tight.

When you can skip it

In the morning, and on evenings without sunscreen or makeup, one gentle cleanser is enough. Very dry skin can also use a cleansing balm on its own and rinse well.

Frequently asked questions

Does double cleansing clog pores?

A well-emulsifying oil rinses away completely. Make sure you add water and rinse thoroughly.

Can I use micellar water as a first step?

Yes, although an oil or balm usually removes water-resistant sunscreen more easily.

Is double cleansing suitable for acne-prone skin?

Many people with oily or blemish-prone skin like it. Choose gentle products and avoid scrubbing.
